The research behind Ioniplex®
A patented fulvic ionic mineral complex with 65+ trace minerals. Two issued US patents. One randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical evaluation on nail, hair and skin condition. Multiple in vitro investigations on absorption, collagen pathways, glycation and mitochondrial metabolism.
How to read this page. Most Ioniplex® research consists of manufacturer-conducted laboratory studies (Sunny Biodiscovery, Santa Paula, California) and case studies — not independent peer-reviewed human randomized trials. We label every source by tier so you know what you're looking at. We never present manufacturer data as "clinical trial" data.
Independent Clinical Study
Boisits (2009) — Six-Week Evaluation of Oral Ioniplex on Nail Condition
Investigator: Edward K. Boisits, PhD. Study Coordinator: Rosemary McNicol, B.S., CCRC. Site: International Research Services, Inc., Port Chester, NY. Sponsor: Mineral BioSciences, LLC. Study No. 3411BK0609.
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical evaluation of two oral Ioniplex formulations against a control, in three groups of healthy female subjects, over six weeks. Nail growth was measured instrumentally using digital photography and image analysis; nail, hair and skin condition were assessed by an expert evaluator and by the panellists themselves.
Why this matters: This is the closest thing in the Ioniplex research portfolio to an independent clinical evaluation — randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled — even though it was sponsored by the manufacturer and has not been published in a peer-reviewed journal. That is exactly why we send you the report rather than quoting a headline from it.
Manufacturer Laboratory Research — Mechanism & Bioavailability
Bioavailability of Ioniplex™ in Human Cells (in vitro)
Lab: Sunny Biodiscovery, Inc. (Santa Paula, CA). Prepared for Mineral BioSciences, March 23, 2015.
Why this matters: Vioni+'s premise is that mineral nutrition is about delivery, not dose. A mineral you cannot absorb is a mineral you did not take. This in vitro report supports that mechanism story at the cellular level. It is not, however, a human bioavailability trial — and we're explicit about that.
Epithelial Permeation of Turmeric With and Without Ioniplex (PAMPA model)
Lab: Sunny Biodiscovery, Inc. (Santa Paula, CA), May 11, 2021. Prepared for Mineral BioSciences. Millipore PAMPA membrane model — the standard laboratory stand-in for passive intestinal absorption. Turmeric extract tested alone and in a 1:1 combination with Ioniplex, in triplicate.
Why this matters: Turmeric is among the most-bought and least-absorbed supplements on the shelf — which is precisely why the category sells piperine, phytosome and oil-carrier versions at a premium. If you already take turmeric, you are already paying for absorption. This is a membrane model rather than a human absorption study, and we say so plainly; but it is the clearest illustration of what a fulvic ionic carrier is actually for, and it is why Vioni+ is a morning dose taken alongside the rest of your routine.
Effect of Ioniplex™ on Mitochondrial Metabolism in Cell Culture
Lab: Sunny Biodiscovery, Inc. Comparative MTT assay (a standard measure of mitochondrial respiratory activity) on human cells. Ioniplex™ compared against two leading commercial energy drinks (No Fear, Full Throttle).
Why this matters: The mechanistic basis for Ioniplex's cellular energy positioning. Cell-culture data, not human data — but consistent across two independent read-outs.
Effect on Type I Collagen Levels in Human Dermal Fibroblasts (in vitro)
Lab: Sunny Biodiscovery, Inc. April 12, 2010. Prepared for Global Organics.
In vitro assay testing the effect of Ioniplex-containing test materials on Type I collagen secretion by aged dermal fibroblast cells.
Why this matters: Collagen production is a key concern for skin appearance after 35. This cell-culture data describes one pathway by which the trace minerals in Ioniplex may support skin's natural processes. Cell-culture results don't always translate to humans — we're cautious about overclaiming.
Effect on Advanced Glycation End-products (in vitro)
Labs: Sunny Biodiscovery, Inc. and BIOalternatives. Two separate assays measuring non-enzymatic glycation against a water control, with aminoguanidine — a known inhibitor of glycation — as the positive reference.
Why this matters: This is the basis on which Ioniplex was patented as an anti-glycation agent (US 8,927,031, listed below). It is cell-free and cell-culture data describing a chemical process — not a human outcome, and we do not present it as one.
Commercial Formulations With vs Without Ioniplex on Muscle and Bone Cells
Lab: Sunny Biodiscovery, Inc. February 22, 2011. Prepared for Mineral BioSciences.
Compared Isagenix and Ensure (commercial supplement beverages) with and without added Ioniplex on human skeletal muscle (HSMC) and bone cell populations.
Why this matters: Supports the broader story that Ioniplex's trace mineral nutrition may be relevant beyond skin and nail health. Pre-clinical data only — but a useful frame for the "cellular nutrition" positioning.
Manufacturer Technical Dossier
Ioniplex White Paper
Publisher: Mineral BioSciences, Goodyear, Arizona. Comprehensive technical dossier covering Ioniplex's composition (over 65 major, minor and trace minerals in ionic form, with the guaranteed composition published in full), sourcing from mineraloid veins across North America, the patented extraction process, applications, and the supporting research bibliography.
How we use it: Background reference and footnote source. Specific claim percentages from this white paper are always qualified as manufacturer laboratory data on file — never as "clinical research" or "proven."
