The phrase is not regulated the way you think
"Clinically studied" is not a certification. There is no minimum bar a product must clear to print it. It simply implies that some study, somewhere, involved the ingredient. It does not tell you whether the study was any good, whether it used the same dose as the product, or whether it even found anything.
The five questions that expose a weak claim
- Was there a placebo group? Without one, you can't separate the ingredient's effect from natural variation and the placebo response. "Everyone felt better" is not evidence.
- Was it randomized and blinded? These controls stop the researchers' and participants' expectations from skewing the result.
- How long did it run? A one-week study can't speak to a process that takes months, like joint comfort.
- What was measured? A validated instrument (like the WOMAC joint index) is data. A vague satisfaction survey is not.
- Does the product dose match the study dose? This is the one brands hide most. A study on 20 mg is meaningless if the capsule contains 2 mg — a practice sometimes called "fairy dusting."

When a claim is real, the brand can name the paper. The "proprietary blend" red flag
If a label lists a "proprietary blend" with a single total weight but won't break down the dose of each ingredient, you cannot verify the dose against any study. That's not proprietary science — it's a way to include a "fairy dusting" of the studied ingredient while implying the full clinical dose.

Ask the brand for the citation — a real PubMed or PMC ID, not a stock-photo "lab." Then look it up. Does the study match the product's dose? Was it placebo-controlled? Did it find what the ad implies? A brand confident in its evidence will point you straight to the paper. A brand that won't is telling you something.
