If glucosamine hasn't done much for your joints, you're not doing it wrong — the evidence for glucosamine has always been mixed. Q-Actin® is a standardized cucumber extract (over 1% idoBR1, an iminosugar amino acid). Its proposed mechanism comes from cell-based laboratory research, not from human studies — an important distinction we keep throughout this piece.
Dose: 2,700 mg vs 20 mg
This is the first thing that surprises people. A typical glucosamine-chondroitin protocol runs around 1,500–2,700 mg per day. The clinically studied Q-Actin® dose is 20 mg per day. That's not a typo — the cucumber extract is studied at roughly one-hundredth the dose, because the proposed mechanism is signaling rather than bulk raw material.
The head-to-head trial — and what it does and doesn't show
The two have been compared directly. In a 180-day randomized, double-blind trial, adults with moderate knee osteoarthritis received either 20 mg/day of Q-Actin® or 2,700 mg/day of glucosamine-chondroitin. On the validated WOMAC joint score, the Q-Actin® group improved by 70.3% versus 33.7% for glucosamine-chondroitin (Nash et al., 2018, PMC6207263).
Three limits belong with that number, and we'd rather you heard them from us:
- It was sponsor-funded.
- It had no placebo arm — it is a two-arm comparison against glucosamine-chondroitin, not against a dummy. So it shows how the two moved relative to each other, not how either performed against no treatment at all.
- It is a pooled multicentre pilot, not a large confirmatory trial.

What the research says
The WOMAC score is a validated joint-assessment questionnaire, not a marketing metric — which is what makes this comparison meaningful. But a percentage only means something once you know what it was measured against. We explain both in WOMAC scores explained.
The shellfish problem
Most glucosamine on the market is derived from shellfish. If you have a shellfish allergy, or you eat plant-based, that rules out a large share of the category. Q-Actin® is cucumber-derived and vegan — which is why it's often the practical choice for people who can't or won't take shellfish-based glucosamine.
What the evidence base looks like overall
Q-Actin® has five published human studies. Beyond the head-to-head, they include a 60-day study reporting a 31.79% WOMAC improvement from baseline — a within-group change, not a placebo-beating one — in which the pre-registered primary measure did not reach statistical significance (Hausenblas et al., 2025), and a 12-week study in healthy adults reporting a finger-dexterity signal (Lloyd et al., 2025). We publish the study that missed alongside the ones that landed, because a brand that only shows you its wins isn't showing you evidence.
Glucosamine has a longer history and far more total studies — but with famously inconsistent results across large reviews. All of this research is on the active ingredient, not on any finished product. Individual results may vary.
So which should you choose?
If glucosamine has worked for you and you tolerate it, there's no reason to abandon it. If it hasn't — or you can't take shellfish, or you'd rather not swallow multiple large pills a day — the cucumber-extract research is worth a serious look, with its limits in view.
